In his words
“My body was a Ferrari, but I’m putting diesel fuel in it, like for a tractor. … Eventually you’re gonna burn out, which is what happened to me. I couldn’t get out of bed.”
Dr. Maurice WernessHis own story, about his late twenties. It is not a promise about anyone else.
Who he is

Who is Dr. Maurice Werness?

Dr. Werness is a naturopathic doctor. He looks for the root causes behind how people feel, then helps them change a few daily habits that matter: what they eat, how they sleep, how they meet stress, how they move and who supports them.

He came to natural medicine through his own health. In his late twenties he ran his body so hard that he could not get out of bed. He says changing how he ate, rested and lived is what brought him back, and it is why he does this work.

Training and community

Where did he train, and what is the Institute for Natural Medicine?

He earned his Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) at Bastyr University in Seattle. Programs like Bastyr's are four-year doctoral programs accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education.

In 1993 he was on the founding board of the Institute for Natural Medicine, a non-profit that works to make naturopathic care and education available to more people, and he served on its board again when it was renewed. See the institute's history.

He still grows much of what he eats on his farm near Durham.
